Bruce Marchiano Gives Interview for Free Lemonade Stories

"It is the single most desperate passionate act of love in human history." ~ Bruce Marchiano commenting on the life of Jesus.

Bruce Marchiano recounted how his vision for his latest project, Jesus...No Greater Love, was born while eating a ham sandwich in Johannesburg, South Africa.  It was 1996 and he was on as speaking tour following the release of The Gospel of Matthew, where he played Jesus.  Over 150,000 South Africans heard Bruce speak while he toured the country and they were moved to ask Jesus into their hearts.

My youngest son, Shane, suggested the family watch the 2010 movie, The Encounter, while scrolling through Netflix.  After watching the movie, I was so touched by Bruce's portrayal of Jesus I decided to look him up and send him a thank you note.  I asked him if he would be willing to share some thoughts about his life as an actor.  Here is Bruce's welcome video message followed by the phone interview Bruce granted for my blog readers...

"Good morning, Bruce.  Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions today about your life as an actor.  My son, Shane, picked out The Encounter for our family to watch together and you did a great job in the movie.  Thanks for agreeing to an interview today."

"How old is your son?" Bruce questioned.

"Sixteen." I replied.

"My fifteen-year-old is also named Shane," he said. (Cue the Twilight Zone music).

Bruce apologized for the dog barking on the other end of the line.

"What kind of dog do you have?" I asked.

"My wife found Paco, a stray, and brought him home.  As you can hear, he's part chihuahua."

My hair began to stand up as I told him our youngest dog is also a chihuahua, a stray we adopted from a shelter.  That eerie feeling continued throughout the interview, as if I were having a regular conversation with Jesus.  Come down to earth, I thought as I asked my first question...

Bruce,  can you please share with my readers how it feels to play the role of Jesus as an actor?

Playing Jesus is humbling.  There is also this sense of excitement.  It's so beyond exciting for many reasons.  He is the most pivotal figure in the history of the universe.  Knowing the Lord, understanding what playing Him counts for...and at the same time, it's heavy with responsibility.   It's the pinnacle of fear and trembling mixed with excitement.

Was there an "aha" moment in your life when the light bulb went off and Jesus became real for you?

There were three moments...the time I gave my life to Jesus, the time period shortly thereafter and the surrounding circumstances; and also during the making of the film.  I grew up going to church so I knew all the stories.  As a young actor in 1989 I had experienced success...but I fast discovered that success can disintegrate, and it was dangerous to build life on things that could fall apart.

There was this confrontation with truth as stark as boiling water.  I knew it was Him.  I was on a hill overlooking Universal Studios.  Everything below me represented everything in life I wanted, and it was like I had to make a choice what was going to rule my life.  I got down on my knees and cried, "Jesus you've got to save me."  There was no emotional response, however, there was this weight off my shoulders...no more burdens.  I stood up and had a whole new life.

Please share your thoughts on your latest project,  Jesus...No Greater Love.  How did you get the vision for this project and what is your role?

Currently I have three roles...writer, producer and actor.  The writing portion is already done.  Because it's such a huge film, I will pass off the producer role to someone more experienced, and I may also pass off the acting role - I'm open to that.  At the same time, the vision rests with me, and that is a key spiritual role.

In the Gospel of Matthew, the power of the Gospel on film got results.  People were changing en masse.   The production quality was low due to insufficient funds.  The business interests controlled.  I believe the Gospel has to be free to reach as many people as possible.  Jesus says you can't serve God and money.  The first movie served investors and sales.  In the middle of my speaking tours, I thought if I could do this again, another Jesus movie but on a full budget, one that stood up with main stream films, free of conflict of interests, I would do it using the Gospel of John.

The opening scenes of the script came to me while eating my ham sandwich in Johannesburg, South Africa.  I scribbled them on a napkin...in the beginning was the word and word was God.

Matthew was a huge film in South Africa.  People didn't know He loved them that way...impassioned, the sun rises and sets in you.  The revelation of His heart became the cornerstone.  People were saying "I didn't know Jesus loved me like this."

As an actor, I study choices that the character makes.  A man's heart is revealed by his actions.  You can tell who a man is by his choices.  He gave up everything to the point of His blood dripping in the sand.  Why?  Why? Why?  What's the end game?

What Jesus did was obvious.  He gave His life for YOU.

What motivates you to get up in the morning?

People need the Lord.  I thank God every day I don't have an occupation to just earn money.  And personally, my kids need their dad.

The non-believers who worked alongside you when you played Jesus were affected by how you portrayed Jesus.  Can you share how their lives changed?

Even the believers were blown away.  It was the depth of love, both in Matthew and the Encounter.  There was a moment in the Encounter where one of the characters rejects Jesus.  In character, I began profusely weeping as the character walks out the door.  You could hear a pin drop when the camera cut...the guys were blown away.  That's how Jesus feels.  Imagine how your heart breaks when your kids make bad choices.  Multiply that times a ka-billion, and there you have the heart of Jesus.

The mother of the young girl in the movie told me later that her daughter asked her, "is that really how Jesus feels?"

This scene did not make the final cut. It did show Jesus weeping because of the pain He felt.

We filmed Matthew in the villages of Morocco.  The workers were all Muslims.  Many people who were there came to the Lord.  I remember them all saying, "I had no idea who Jesus was until today."

Why is it important to you to share Jesus with the world in places far off like Africa?

People need the Lord.  At the end of the day, everything withers...the BMW, the checkbook.  All that's left standing is you and Him.

You have witnessed healing in audiences when you are speaking about Jesus.  Can you describe the feedback you've received about what happened to these people?

It blows my mind.  There's no explanation, not en masse.   Wow!  That's great, the real thing.

Years ago I was in a village in Africa and this man comes running up.  He attended the service the evening before.  Years before, his leg was badly damaged in an accident and he could no longer work.  But there he was running around.  He said, "ask the people in the village, they know me, that I couldn't us this leg.  Now I'm healed!"

This past September, the same man approached me.  He asked, "remember me?"  He rolled up his pants to show me the scars.  But his leg works 100%.  God is alive.

What is your fondest memory?

My finest moment was standing with my wife and getting married.  This is your portion in life.  My family is God's hand of goodness.  I'm thankful for my wife and kids.

In my acting career, the experience of making Matthew... it was an adventure.  There was this fresh revelation of Jesus, and it was like living life as large as life could be lived.

What is your hope for people reading this interview?

That they come to know His heart for them.

How can my blog readers help you with your future vision?

My vision for Jesus... No Greater Love is donation based.  If people could log on and give $10 that would be great.  An Armenian guy here in L.A. raised $700 from approaching his friends saying, "give me ten dollars for a good cause."  So there are many ways to help, and I'm very thankful, because it will take all of us coming together.

At the end of the interview, I asked Bruce if he had any idea when his next Jesus movie will be released and he told me he had thrown his hands up in the air saying, "the sooner the better," but only God knows.

I thought to myself, the last time I remember Moses throwing his hands up in the air, the Red Sea parted and God's people were free.  Please click on Bruce's message below and support his vision to share Jesus with the world.  Don't forget to tell your friends.

A Collection of Poems by Dr. Tom Mulligan

Today's lemonade story comes from my uncle, Dr. Tom Mulligan.  He sent me a collection of poems to be shared with my readers who may have trouble coping with the loss of a loved one, or finding a spouse.  When my uncle encounters someone struggling with difficult circumstances, he offers a poem for them to recite daily.  These poems are a great way to turn your lemons into lemonade.  Enjoy...

MAY THY HOLY WILL BE DONE

Everyday when I awake,
I kneel down and say,

“May Thy Holy Will be done,
please guide me through the day.”

When what I want, I do not get,
and work becomes a task,

It’s time for me to wonder why,
and this is what I ask.

“Did I really mean my prayer,
“Thy Holy Will be done,”

which means some days will seem all work,
without the room for fun?

God answer prayers, but keep in mind,
He answers, Yes or No.

He knows that what you really want,
may keep you on the go.

It’s what you need, not what you want,
that God provides for you.

So, say your prayers, but keep in mind,
God knows what you should do.

“May Thy Holy Will be done,”
will mean that you must say,

“Whatever happens now to me,
is what God wants this day.”

A CLEAR CONSCIENCE
***
Have you listened to the birds sing, early in the morn?
Has your heart skipped a beat when a child was born?

Have you treasured the fragrance of flowers in the Spring?
Have you listened to the trees in the forest sing?

If you have been lifted by white clouds above,

or experienced the feelings that develop with love;
if stars in the sky bring light to your eyes,
and you feel dazed when seeing blue skies,

if you have seen leaves change colors in Fall,

you haven’t begun to experience it all.
You have had but a glimpse of what it can be
to have a clear conscience – that is the key.

Then you will find that all you enjoy

can always be with you in sadness and joy.
For when we know we have done what is right,
our conscience forever makes everything bright.
***

FREE WILL
***
My Lord and my God, You gave me life,

a beautiful family, a wonderful wife.
Free will You also gave to me,
so I could choose to be with Thee.

Though one can make an evil choice,

it’s not so easy when a voice
says “I am waiting here for you,
it all depends on what you do.”

Take your cross and you will see,

forever more a life with Me.
Free will is like a special key –
damnation or eternity.

We know that we are free to choose.

the choice is simply “win” or lose.”
What we want may not be right,
it may be very wrong.

But if temptations we will fight,

it won’t be very long,
before the Lord says “Come to Me.”
I want you for eternity.

TO MY LOVING WIFE, TERESA
*** When I was young, I liked to pray
that I would find a wife someday

who loved her God and family
and who would be the best for me.

My prayers were answered soon enough,

I found my “diamond in the rough.”
we met one week while “Casa bound”.
The wife I wanted now was found.

The greatest thing about my life

is that I have a loving wife,
who loves the children – oh so much!!
- with them she lends her loving touch.

She helps so many friends each day.

“no” she never learned to say.
Smiles she brings to every face,
- a credit to the human race.

My God gave this great gift to me,

so I could spend eternity
with God and saints and all above,
and wife and children, all in love.
***
Your loving husband, Tom

THE MAN IN THE GLASS
***
Look in the mirror and what do you see?

Is it the person you wanted to be?

If you get what you want, but it’s only for you,

then look in the mirror and search for a clue.

If the person you see is greedy and blind,

the answer you need may lie in your mind.

Happiness lies in what you can do

for others in need, whether many or few.

Take care of their needs and soon you will find

the one in the mirror to be gentle and kind.

You will never be happy unless you can say,

“I like what I see in the mirror on this day.”

You may fool the whole world as you pass through the years,

and get pats on your back as you pass.

But your final reward will be heartaches and tears,

if you’ve cheated the one in the glass.

MY PRAYER
***
When I awake and start the day,

this prayer to God is what I say:

“Please give me strength to do Thy will,

so that my actions may fulfill

the purpose for which I was born,

avoiding things which bring your scorn.”

To help myself and fellow man

means doing everything I can

to spread the joy of God each day,

by helping friends in every way.

If they are homeless, sick, or cold,

the love we share can now unfold.

For when we learn to give to others,

we discover we are brothers.

Then we know what life will be,

when next we face eternity.

Because what we have done for them,

we have really done for Him.

Love on earth and we will see,

we all become one family.

Although our lives will end someday,

our souls with God will ever stay.

PRAYER FOR A GOOD WIFE
*****
My Lord and my God, I ask You to find

a wife with a heart and inquisitive mind.

More importantly, however, I ask You to see

that spiritually speaking, she’s just right for me.

For You know what’s important in this short life of ours –

that we seek You my Lord, amongst all the stars.

May she reflect what You wish in each person You make,

so together we do all things for Your sake.

May all of the things the two of us do

bring us closer together and closer to You.

Grant me this wife as soon as You can.

I know it will make me a happier man.

Because whatever we choose to do

will lead us to “Forever with You.”

Dr. Jeni Stepanek Offers Lemonade to the World

"Choose to inhale, don't simply breathe to exist." ~ last statement to Jeni from her son, Mattie, before he left our world.

My cell phone rang at exactly 9:00am, the appointed time for my one hour chat with Dr. Jeni Stepanek, a motivational speaker and writer who wrote "Messenger," a New York Times bestseller.  Her son, Mattie, published five New York Times bestsellers before his fourteenth birthday, the first one he celebrated in heaven.  Two more collections of his writings were published after his death and they also made the best seller list.  A preliminary committee has formed to investigate Mattie’s Cause as a saint for peace.

Jeni, the mother of four children who died from neuromuscular disease, has the adult onset of the same disease.  Here is her lemonade story...

"Hello, Michael, it's Jeni Stepanek.  How are you?"

"It's great to speak with you today, Jeni.  Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to help spread your son's important message of peace.  Are you ready to get started?"

I emailed a list of questions to Jeni days in advance for her review and the first one struck a chord with her...

Have you always been good at making lemonade?

Jeni:  Not everything that is challenging or a burden is a lemon.  Lemons are fruit. I'm not fond of calling something a lemon when it is referring to people.  We refer to defective cars as lemons.  When we focus on the identity of burdens, when we look at challenges face by people as lemons, we might miss the blessings.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned from the burdens?

Jeni:  Hope is real.  Hope is not wishful thinking.  Mattie taught me hope is real because it begins with an attitude, and an attitude is a choice.  Whether our life is burdened or blessed by disability, we are in charge of our own attitude.  We don't always choose what happens to us or around us or to those we love, but we can choose the attitude that reflects those truths onto others and into the future.  If we are late because of traffic, or there are other tie-ups, our scowling affects others.

I choose how I present myself to the world in spite of what's happening in personal life. That doesn’t mean ignoring or denying my feelings, it is simply about the words and actions I choose to share my feelings. I work hard to keep my attitude anchored in hope.  There is potential for things rooted in faith.... that's where lemonade comes from. We don’t just choose hope once and then life is smooth. We need to make the choice for hope again and again, sometimes hundreds of times within each day. It sounds easy, but this may be the hardest choice in the world.

Mattie wrote a poem the day America was attacked.  Can you share how this came to be?

Jeni: Mattie wrote three poems on 9/11.  The first one, "Attack on America" was just sixteen words, a statement of shock.  Both of us had friends in the both the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Mattie had just come home after spending six months in an open ward I.C.U. where he was in a shared room with sixteen children in crisis. He witnessed trauma, and sometimes death, on a regular basis.  He was ten and eleven years old at the time.  When he got out of the hospital, he attended an annual fundraising event with hundreds of firefighters from all over the U.S. and Canada who had become close friends across the years.  He knew some of those same firefighters were in the WTC buildings that were destroyed.  He watched his friends’ lives go up in ash.

Also, we live near Andrews Air Force Base, and we suddenly heard fighter jets scrambling, so we knew another plane was headed for D.C., before it made the news. I feared for our country’s future, and even for our own future in those moments.  I wondered, is this an air battle or will bombs be dropped?  Should we leave our home?  Do we have enough portable oxygen tanks?

I was stunned. I was immensely sad. And I was concerned for our future. By mid-day, Mattie wrote a second poem expressing anger and concern, and questioning how we go on from something like this.  The phone lines were jammed, we couldn’t reach our friends in New York or the Pentagon, and we both watched the news without speaking.  I kept thinking, how can I help my son. His whole life has been about loss.

Mattie and I remained silent throughout most of the day.  We both knew General Richard Myers and others at the Pentagon.  We both knew firefighters who were surely in the World Trade Centers when they collapsed. By late night, we curled up together on the couch, knowing sleep would eventually overcome us despite the shock and concern.  We knew we needed to pray, as we prayed together every night.  I told Mattie I wasn’t even sure where to begin, or what to pray for in the moment. Mattie said we needed to pray that every fleck of ash become mortar for rebuilding the mosaic of life, rather than fueling cries of vengeance. I asked him how we even begin such a journey, and he responded, we need to stop. Just stop... and proceeded to type his third entry of the day in his computer journal. He titled it “For Our World.” Without pausing, the words flowed. Mattie didn't label his words a poem or prayer.  He wanted his message to be recognized as an international passage for peace.  “Not everyone likes poems or prayers,” he said, however, “Everybody looks for answers. A passage is a written statement, but it is also a route, a direction that can offer guidance."

We talked about this statement the next day, when he began sending “For Our World” out by e-mail. “Peace is not about revenge, or getting our way or what we think we are owed. I don't like terrorists,” he said. “But it's not my job to judge. My job is to be responsible for my choices, and to make good choices that help peace grow. We can't say, 'I want peace BUT.'  We need to make peace our attitude, our habit, our reality. Peace has to grow for working together with other people, even people we don’t like or disagree with. Peace is rooted in balancing basic needs. We can disagree and still have peace, a just peace...one person at a time.”

How did Mattie get this inspiration for this passage?

Jeni:  Beginning when he was a preschooler, Mattie said God placed messages in his heart, and that his purpose in life was to shape those messages with words and share them with others so that they, too, could hear and understand. Mattie said he heard a voice in his heart.  Not voices like speech that we hear with our ears, but a voice in his heart.  I was amazed, and also, concerned. Mattie just seemed to ‘know God.’ I grew to know God, but Mattie just seemed to know God as a friend. Some people talk about whether they ‘believe in God, That was never an issue with Mattie; he simply believed God, and shared the messages from his heart. Those messages included realizations like life is worthy. That God does not cause suffering, or choose who to burden or who will be the recipients of hardship... these are things that happen in life. God’s plan is for us to know Him, and to understand that He is with us during the good times, and also during the suffering.  We are not alone. Mattie also said that God looks at the potential in all of us, even in the worst moments of human-made tragedy. God always sees the potential for good to grow from a person, or from a situation. That is why we must carefully choose how we move forward in life.

At the end of the day, Mattie concluded this act of terrorism, while tragic and irreversible, has the potential for good to grow from it. That is the root of Mattie’s vision for peace being about rebuilding the mosaic of life, because life is worthy.

The tenth anniversary of 9/11 is coming up.  What are your thoughts?

Jeni:  The events of 9/11 shifted how Mattie looked at the world.  There are countries where terrorist attacks are a sad but daily reality.  After witnessing and feeling the tragic truths of 9/11 in our own communities, how can our eyes and minds and hearts not be opened to those citizens of our world who are starving because we have not equitably distributed resources? Opened to countries where treatable diseases are rampant because there's no access to affordable healthcare, or to a sterile bandage? To the reality that civil and human rights are still being ignored because of class or creed or color of skin?

Mattie saw the human connection on that tragic day. He celebrated that citizens came together, in prayer and in silence, and in a commitment to peace, at least during the first months following the tragedy. So here we are ten years later – what now, what next?  I would like your blog readers to visit mattieonline.com and find something that speaks to them. I encourage people to read Mattie’s “For Our World” poem which is now posted in dozens of languages.

Read and say 'wow. What can I do to choose peace, to share peace, and to rebuild the mosaic?'  Download and post For Our World. This is the glass of lemonade I offer your readers to drink.

Are You Being Called to Write a Story?

I hear this all the time...."I have a great story to share, however, I'm not a writer."

Here's my answer... I didn't know I was a writer until I started writing.  I didn't think anyone would read my blog and I deliberately made it hard to find.  It was my way of saying yes to God in a partial way.  God found a way to send readers to this obscure site in a sea of over 200 million other blogs.  Along the way, other writers helped me overcome my anxiety issues about writing and I became a self-published author.

I've learned an important lesson about who God calls for His plans.  They aren't usually the qualified.  They are people who work at Denny's, they are firefighters, they are regular people.  God qualifies these people by surrounding them with the right people who can help develop the special talent often hidden from the world.

You are a child of God.  Your story matters.  You have the ability to change the world by sharing your lemonade story.  I will no longer underestimate the wonders God can do when we say yes, even if it starts with a "half-yes."  Go ahead, take the first step and email your story.  I look forward to hearing from you....socalmulligan808@gmail.com.

A New Theme Song for Lemonade Stories

Thanks for your patience with this new blog, five days old as of today.  I've discovered everyone I meet has a lemonade story to share. So far, five people have agreed to share their story here and I promise to post them as soon as they are submitted.

I found a song this morning that reminded me of the first settlers.  Each one had been given lemons.  They suffered from famine, religious persecution and many other difficult situations.  These first Americans ventured out to a brave new world in search of lemonade.  For two hundred years, this country has been a place for others to come and set up their own lemonade stand.

In honor of those men and women who fought against all the odds to make lemonade, I offer this Youtube video.  May all those around the world looking for lemonade find hope and may we one day hear your lemonade story.  Don't forget to click the follow button so you can read stories from regular people, and maybe a few famous ones, offering you a cup of virtual lemonade to brighten your day.
